Decide the volume size by the limit
Upload forms usually cap at 2 GB, FAT32 at 4 GB per file, and mail at far less. Set the volume slightly below the limit; a part that is one byte too large fails after an hour of compressing.
-v1900m
A 60 GB folder will not fit through an upload form or onto a FAT32 stick. Volumes solve that, and the one mistake is extracting from the wrong part.
Create a **7z archive with a volume size** such as 1900 MB, keep **all parts in one folder**, and extract from **part 001 only**. Every other part is found automatically.

-v1900m
Create the archive with the volume switch in one pass. Splitting a finished archive afterwards gives you fragments without the index, and the last fragment cannot be opened on its own.
7z a -t7z -mx=5 -v1900m backup.7z D:\rojects
A hash list tells you whether a copy across the network arrived intact. Generate it next to the volumes, and keep it with them rather than in a separate message.
certutil -hashfile backup.7z.001 SHA256
Open only backup.7z.001 and let 7-Zip walk the rest. Every other part must sit in the same directory with its exact original name.
7z x backup.7z.001
Videos, photos and installers gain nothing from compression. Use the store method to split without spending an hour on a file that will not shrink.
7z a -t7z -mx=0 -v1900m media.7z E:\ideos
Extract to a scratch folder and compare the file count and the hashes with the source. A split archive is only useful if all parts are present, and a missing one shows up at the end of the extraction.
7z t backup.7z.001
A part is missing or was renamed. Check the numbering from 001 upward without gaps.
A truncated download, usually the last part. Compare its size to the others; the final part is normally the smallest.
The volume is larger than 4 GB. Recreate the set with a 1900 MB volume size.
The data was already compressed. Use store mode and stop paying for a second pass.
No. A volume is a fragment with no index; only the set is an archive.
7z compresses better and splits cleanly. Zip wins only when the recipient has no 7-Zip.
Delete the volume set once the extraction is verified. The source folder was never modified by compressing or splitting it.
