Stop Games Launching on the Wrong Monitor

A game that opens on the secondary screen is not random - Windows, the engine and the launcher each keep their own idea of which display is main.

by@guidox updated:10/31/26 time:15 min level:Beginner tested on:Windows 11 24H2 works on:Windows 10, Windows 11
TL;DR

Set the gaming monitor as **main display**, move the window once with **Win + Shift + Arrow** and close the game properly so it saves the position. Check the engine's own config file only if that fails.

Before you start

Requirements

  • Two or more monitors
  • Windows 11
  • The game installed
Step by step

Instructions

01

Make the right monitor the main display

In Display settings select the monitor you play on and tick **Make this my main display**. The taskbar and the primary desktop move there; games that default to the primary display follow.

Settings > System > Display > Make this my main display
02

Move the window once and quit cleanly

With the game in windowed mode press **Win + Shift + Arrow** to push it to the other screen, then exit through the game menu. Killing the process means the window position is never written to the config.

Win + Shift + Left / Right
⚠ warningAlt + F4 counts as a clean exit for most games. Task Manager does not.
03

Run borderless instead of fullscreen

Exclusive fullscreen grabs whatever display Windows reports as primary at that moment. Borderless windowed uses the window position the game saved, which is why it stays where you put it.

tipBorderless also makes alt-tabbing instant. The cost is a small amount of input latency in some engines.
04

Edit the engine config when the game ignores you

Most engines store the monitor index in a text file under Documents. Unity titles keep it in a graphics settings file, Unreal in GameUserSettings.ini; set the index to 0 for the primary display.

%USERPROFILE%\ocuments\y Games\game>\GameUserSettings.ini
05

Check the launcher's window memory

A launcher that opens on the wrong screen usually drags the game with it. Move the launcher, close it completely from the tray, then start the game again.

06

Repeat after a driver update

Driver installs and monitor swaps reset the display order. If a game jumps back to the other screen after an update, reorder the displays and start the game once in windowed mode.

Troubleshooting

Common issues

The game opens off-screen entirely

A saved position points at a monitor that is not connected. Press Win + Shift + Arrow to pull it back, or delete the config file.

The game minimizes on launch

An HDR or refresh rate mismatch between the two displays. Set both to the same refresh rate or launch windowed once.

It locks to 60 Hz on the second screen

The second monitor runs a different refresh rate. Set the game to fullscreen on the primary display or match the rates.

Only one game misbehaves

Its engine ignores the primary display flag. Use the config file or force windowed mode through the launch options.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Can I set a monitor per game in Windows?

No. Windows has one primary display; the rest is per-game configuration.

Does unplugging the second monitor help?

It forces the game onto the remaining screen, which is a fine one-time fix for a stubborn title.

How to undo this

Set the previous monitor as main display again in Display settings. Config edits are undone by deleting the file the game recreates on next start.
