Stop OneDrive from Syncing over a Metered Connection

TL;DR

Mark the connection as metered in **Settings > Network & internet**, then in OneDrive enable **Sync over metered networks** only when you want it. Check the throughput limit too.

Before you start

Requirements

  • Windows 11
  • OneDrive signed in
  • 10 minutes
Step by step

Instructions

01

Mark the connection as metered

Windows treats a metered connection as expensive and holds background transfers. The setting is per network profile and survives a reconnect.

Get-NetConnectionProfile | Select-Object Name,NetworkCategory,InterfaceAlias
Get-ItemProperty 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles\*' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Select-Object PSChildName,Cost
Get-NetConnectionProfile -InterfaceAlias 'Wi-Fi' | Set-NetConnectionProfile -NetworkCategory Public
02

Set the per-network cost explicitly

The UI checkbox writes a cost value that OneDrive reads. Setting it from the command line is the reliable way on a machine where the toggle is hidden.

Start-Process ms-settings:network-wifi
# Wi-Fi > your network > Metered connection > Set as metered
Get-NetConnectionProfile | Select-Object Name,NetworkCategory
Get-ItemProperty 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Select-Object -First 1
03

Check OneDrive's own setting

OneDrive has an independent switch. With it off, sync pauses on a metered link and resumes on an unmetered one without losing state.

Get-Process OneDrive -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Select-Object Id,Path
Get-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\OneDrive' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Select-Object * -ExcludeProperty PS*
# OneDrive tray icon > Settings > Sync and backup > Advanced settings
04

Limit the bandwidth instead of pausing

A throughput cap keeps small files moving while stopping a 20 GB photo sync. The setting exists in the same advanced page and applies per hour.

Get-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\OneDrive\Accounts\Business1' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Select-Object * -ExcludeProperty PS*
# OneDrive settings > Sync and backup > Advanced > Limit download/upload rate
05

Choose which folders sync at all

Files On-Demand keeps the folder but not the content. Excluding a large folder from sync removes it from the local disk and from future transfers.

Get-ChildItem "$env:USERPROFILE\OneDrive" -Force | Select-Object Name,Mode | Select-Object -First 10
Get-Item "$env:USERPROFILE\OneDrive" | Select-Object Attributes
# OneDrive settings > Account > Choose folders
06

Verify what is actually transferring

A capped sync should show a small, steady rate. A spike means the setting did not apply and the app is uploading at full speed.

Get-NetAdapterStatistics | Select-Object Name,ReceivedBytes,SentBytes
Start-Sleep -Seconds 30
Get-NetAdapterStatistics | Select-Object Name,ReceivedBytes,SentBytes
Get-Process OneDrive | Select-Object Id,CPU,WorkingSet
Troubleshooting

Common issues

The metered toggle is missing

Some Wi-Fi drivers and VPN adapters hide it. Set the cost value in the network profile registry, or use a public profile as a workaround.

OneDrive ignores the setting

The client overrides it for large uploads. Use the bandwidth limit, which applies regardless of the network cost.

Sync stays paused after leaving the hotspot

Resume it from the tray menu, or restart the OneDrive process. The pause state is kept in the client, not in Windows.

Another app uses the same link

Metered applies to all background transfers, but each app decides whether to honour it. Check Windows Update and Store download settings too.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Does marking a network metered break updates?

It delays them. Security updates still arrive, feature updates wait for an unmetered connection.

Does this affect a wired connection?

The setting exists for Ethernet too, but Windows hides it by default. The registry cost value works the same way.

Can I switch it off automatically?

No. The flag is per network profile; a new hotspot is a new profile and starts unmetered.

How to undo this

Uncheck Set as metered for that network, or remove the cost value from the profile, and re-enable sync in OneDrive.
