Stop Windows from Changing Your Default Printer

TL;DR

Turn off **Let Windows manage my default printer** in **Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners**, then set the default explicitly with **Set-Printer**.

Before you start

Requirements

  • Windows 11
  • At least two printers
  • 10 minutes
Step by step

Instructions

01

See which printer is default now

The default printer carries a flag in the print spooler. A machine that switches on its own shows a different flag after every print job.

Get-Printer | Select-Object Name,PrinterStatus,Type
Get-CimInstance Win32_Printer | Select-Object Name,Default,WorkOffline,Shared
(Get-CimInstance Win32_Printer | Where-Object Default).Name
02

Turn off the automatic management

**LegacyDefaultPrinterMode** toggles the Windows 10 style behaviour. With it set, the last used printer no longer becomes the default.

New-Item 'HKCU:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows' -Force | Out-Null
Set-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows' -Name LegacyDefaultPrinterMode -Value 1 -Type DWord
Get-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows' | Select-Object LegacyDefaultPrinterMode
03

Do it in the UI as well

The Settings toggle is the supported switch and it writes the same state. Doing both avoids a surprise when an update resets one of them.

Start-Process ms-settings:printers
# Printers & scanners > Let Windows manage my default printer > Off
Get-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows' | Select-Object LegacyDefaultPrinterMode
04

Set the default explicitly

**Set-Printer -Name** makes one printer the default and clears the flag on the others. The change applies to the current user only.

Set-Printer -Name 'HP LaserJet 1020'
Get-CimInstance Win32_Printer | Where-Object Default | Select-Object Name
Get-Printer | Select-Object Name,PrinterStatus | Sort-Object Name
05

Check the per-app behaviour

Some apps remember their own printer and ignore the default. A print dialog that keeps offering the PDF printer has its own last-used setting.

Get-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows' | Select-Object Device
Get-Content "$env:USERPROFILE\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\PrinterPorts" -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Select-Object -First 5
Get-PrinterProperty -PrinterName 'HP LaserJet 1020' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Select-Object PropertyName,Value
06

Verify after a reboot

The test is a restart and a print from two different apps. If the default moves again, a policy or a management agent is overriding the user setting.

Restart-Computer
Get-CimInstance Win32_Printer | Where-Object Default | Select-Object Name
Get-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows' | Select-Object LegacyDefaultPrinterMode
Get-WinEvent -LogName 'Microsoft-Windows-PrintService/Admin' -MaxEvents 5 -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Select-Object TimeCreated,Id,Message -First 2
Troubleshooting

Common issues

The toggle is greyed out

A policy controls it, or the machine is managed. Check the PointAndPrint and printer policy keys in HKLM.

It still switches after the change

LegacyDefaultPrinterMode is set for the user, but another account prints too. Each user has its own default.

Set-Printer fails with access denied

The printer is a shared network printer and the server set it. Change the default on the client, not on the server.

Two printers have the default flag

A stale spooler state. Restart the spooler and set the default again.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Does this affect other users?

No. The default printer and the management flag are per user profile.

Can I keep the automatic behaviour for one app?

No, the setting is global for the user. Apps can still remember their own last printer.

Why does Windows do this at all?

It is meant to help people who print from several apps to the same device. On a machine with a PDF printer it mostly annoys.

How to undo this

Set LegacyDefaultPrinterMode back to 0, or turn the Settings toggle on again, and choose the printer you actually use as default.
