Stop Windows Search from Returning Web Results

TL;DR

Turn off **Search highlights** and web search in **Settings > Privacy & security > Search permissions**, then set **BingSearchEnabled = 0** and **DisableSearchBoxSuggestions = 1** under the Search policy key.

Before you start

Requirements

  • Windows 11
  • Admin rights for the machine-wide value
  • 10 minutes
Step by step

Instructions

01

Confirm what the search box is doing

A result with a globe or a URL comes from the web. A result with a file path is local. The distinction decides which setting to change.

Get-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Select-Object BingSearchEnabled,CortanaConsent,SearchboxTaskbarMode
Get-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Select-Object DisableSearchBoxSuggestions
Get-ItemProperty 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Search' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
02

Turn off the web results

**BingSearchEnabled = 0** removes web suggestions for the current user. The UI equivalent moved between builds, so the registry value is the stable one.

New-Item 'HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search' -Force | Out-Null
Set-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search' -Name BingSearchEnabled -Value 0 -Type DWord
Set-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search' -Name CortanaConsent -Value 0 -Type DWord
Get-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search' | Select-Object BingSearchEnabled,CortanaConsent
03

Disable the suggestion box

**DisableSearchBoxSuggestions** stops the search box from contacting the network at all. It is a policy key, so it needs a restart of Explorer.

New-Item 'HKCU:\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer' -Force | Out-Null
Set-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer' -Name DisableSearchBoxSuggestions -Value 1 -Type DWord
Stop-Process -Name explorer -Force
Get-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer' | Select-Object DisableSearchBoxSuggestions
04

Keep the local index working

Turning off web results must not break local search. The indexer service and the indexed locations are separate settings and should stay enabled.

Get-Service WSearch | Select-Object Status,StartType
Get-ItemProperty 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Search' | Select-Object SetupCompletedSuccessfully,EnableFindMyFiles
Get-ChildItem 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Search\CrawlScopeManager\Windows' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Select-Object -First 5 Name
05

Turn off search highlights

Highlights are the daily images and suggestions in the search panel. They are a content feature, not a search feature, and they have their own toggle.

Start-Process ms-settings:search-permissions
Get-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SearchSettings' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Select-Object IsDynamicSearchBoxEnabled
Set-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SearchSettings' -Name IsDynamicSearchBoxEnabled -Value 0 -Type DWord -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
06

Verify with a search that should be local

Typing an installed app name should return only the local entry. A web section that remains means the policy was applied to the wrong hive.

# press Win and type 'notepad'
Get-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search' | Select-Object BingSearchEnabled
Get-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer' | Select-Object DisableSearchBoxSuggestions
tasklist /fi "imagename eq SearchHost.exe"
Troubleshooting

Common issues

Web results still appear

The policy is in HKCU, and a machine-wide policy in HKLM overrides it. Check HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Search too.

The search box is completely empty

The indexer is stopped or the policy is too broad. Start WSearch and check the indexed locations.

The setting reverts after an update

A feature update can reset HKCU values. Reapply, or use the HKLM policy for persistence.

File Explorer search is also affected

Explorer uses the same indexer but not the same suggestions. Check the indexing options for the folders you need.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Does this break the search in apps?

No. Apps with their own search are unaffected; this only changes the shell's search box.

Can I keep web results on a work machine?

That is a policy decision. The value is per user, so a shared machine can differ per account.

Will this speed up search?

It removes the network round trip for suggestions, which makes the box feel faster, especially offline.

How to undo this

Set BingSearchEnabled back to 1, delete the DisableSearchBoxSuggestions value, and restart Explorer.
