Turn Off Game DVR Background Capture to Stop Stutter

The Game Bar records in the background the moment a game starts, whether you asked for it or not. On a mid-range machine that is a visible stutter.

TL;DR

Disable **background recording** in the Game Bar settings, leave the manual capture available, then restart the game. Check the graphics driver's own overlay before blaming the game.

Before you start

Requirements

  • Xbox Game Bar
  • Ten minutes
Step by step

Instructions

01

Open the Game Bar settings, not the widget

The capture page holds both the manual recording and the background loop. The two are independent; disabling one leaves the other working.

Win + G > Settings > Capturing
02

Turn off background recording

The background recorder holds a rolling buffer in memory and encodes constantly. On a machine with integrated graphics or a busy processor that cost shows up as frame time spikes.

03

Check the per-game override

The Game Bar remembers settings per title. A game that still records after the global change has its own switch set, and the widget shows it.

tipSome titles enable capture by default because their store page asks for it. Check the widget in-game once.
04

Disable the other overlays

Discord, Steam, the graphics driver and the game client each draw an overlay. Two overlays hooking the same frame is a classic source of stutter and of dropped input.

05

Test with a frame time graph

A frame time graph shows the spikes the average frame rate hides. Compare a two minute run before and after the change in the same area of the game.

06

Keep manual capture for the moments you want

Manual recording still works through the hotkey and costs nothing while idle. Turning off background recording does not remove the ability to capture a clip.

Win + Alt + R
Troubleshooting

Common issues

Stutter remains after disabling capture

Another overlay or the driver's own instant replay. Disable them one at a time.

The Game Bar will not open in-game

Exclusive fullscreen or a game that blocks the hook. Use borderless windowed.

Clips are missing frames

The encoder is competing for the GPU. Lower the capture quality or use the driver's encoder.

Settings reset after an update

Check the per-game override again. Updates sometimes restore defaults.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Does this help on a high-end PC?

Usually not measurably. The cost is proportional to the spare GPU time.

Is the Game Bar safe to uninstall?

It can be removed, but some store games expect it. Disabling capture is the smaller change.

How to undo this

Switch background recording back on in the Game Bar capture page. The setting is stored per user and reverts instantly.
