Check the current Desktop backup status
Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the taskbar notification area. Open Help & Settings > Settings > Sync and backup > Manage backup. Check whether Desktop is enabled before making changes.
OneDrive may automatically back up Desktop files and synchronize changes across devices. Disable Desktop folder backup safely and check where your local files are stored afterward.
Open OneDrive's backup management settings and turn off Desktop backup. Check the original and local Desktop folders before moving any files.
Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the taskbar notification area. Open Help & Settings > Settings > Sync and backup > Manage backup. Check whether Desktop is enabled before making changes.
Open File Explorer and inspect the Desktop folder under your OneDrive account. Check that important files are synchronized and available before changing backup settings. Keep an independent copy of critical files if you are uncertain about their sync status.
Select the OneDrive cloud icon and open Settings > Sync and backup > Manage backup. Find the Desktop folder in the backup management window. Leave Documents and Pictures unchanged unless you intend to modify their backup settings too.
Select the Desktop backup control and choose Stop backup. Follow the confirmation prompts and choose the available option that keeps files accessible where you need them. OneDrive may offer different file-location choices depending on the installed client and sync state.
Open File Explorer and select Desktop in the navigation pane. Check which files and folders are now visible on your Windows Desktop. Do not delete files from OneDrive simply because they are not displayed locally.
In File Explorer, open the OneDrive Desktop folder and locate files that remain stored there. Copy the files you need into the local Desktop folder after confirming that enough storage is available. Copying is safer than moving until you have verified that both locations contain the expected files.
Return to OneDrive > Settings > Sync and backup > Manage backup. Confirm that Desktop is no longer being backed up. Create a harmless test file on the local Desktop and verify that it does not appear in the OneDrive Desktop folder through automatic backup.
Inspect the OneDrive Desktop folder and the OneDrive website. Copy the required files back to the local Desktop rather than deleting or moving cloud copies immediately.
Close applications using those files, ensure they are fully downloaded, and retry copying them after synchronization completes.
Check whether the device is managed by an organization or whether OneDrive is still processing a backup operation.
It should not be treated as a deletion operation, but file placement and availability can change. Verify both local and cloud copies before cleaning up folders.
Yes. OneDrive manages supported folder backups individually.
Open OneDrive > Settings > Sync and backup > Manage backup and enable Desktop backup again. Confirm the synchronization and file placement before deleting any duplicate copies.
