Turn On Windows Sonic and Keep Your Headphones Correct

Spatial sound turns any stereo headphone into a positional mix. It also turns itself off, conflicts with game audio engines and sounds wrong when the endpoint is configured as 7.1.

TL;DR

Choose **Windows Sonic for Headphones** in the output device's **Spatial sound** setting, keep the endpoint at **Stereo** with 24-bit, and turn it off for games that ship their own HRTF.

Before you start

Requirements

  • A stereo headphone or headset
  • Windows 10 or 11
  • 15 minutes
Step by step

Instructions

01

Check the endpoint is stereo first

Spatial sound needs a **stereo endpoint**. A virtual 7.1 device already carries channel positions, and Sonic on top of that produces a diffuse, hollow result.

Get-PnpDevice -Class AudioEndpoint | Select-Object FriendlyName,Status
mmsys.cpl
02

Turn on Windows Sonic

The switch sits per output device under **Spatial sound**. It applies immediately; no reboot and no extra download.

start ms-settings:sound
:: Output > the headphone device > Spatial sound > Windows Sonic for Headphones
tipWindows Sonic is free and built in. Dolby Access and DTS do the same job for a licence, and only one can be active at a time.
03

Set a format the endpoint likes

24-bit at 48 kHz is the safe default for music and games. A format the DAC does not support shows up as crackling or as silence after the format switch.

mmsys.cpl
:: Playback > device > Properties > Advanced > 24 bit, 48000 Hz > Test
⚠ warningDo not enable **Allow applications to take exclusive control** on a headset you also use for chat. Exclusive mode is the usual reason Sonic appears to switch itself off.
04

Turn it off for games with their own HRTF

Competitive shooters often render their own binaural mix. Running both stacks double-processes the audio and moves footsteps in the wrong direction.

:: same switch: Spatial sound > Off, per game session
Get-Process | Where-Object ProcessName -match 'game|launcher' | Select-Object -First 5 ProcessName
05

Fix it switching itself off

The setting is stored per device and per format. Changing sample rate, replugging a USB headset or installing a driver update can reset it.

Get-Service Audiosrv,AudioEndpointBuilder | Select-Object Name,Status,StartType
Get-PnpDevice -Class MEDIA | Where-Object FriendlyName -match 'Headset|Headphone' | Select-Object FriendlyName,Status
06

Test with a known positional source

Use a channel-check video or a game with a fixed sound source. Walking around an object should keep its position stable rather than jump between ears.

Get-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Multimedia\Audio' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Select-Object *
Troubleshooting

Common issues

The option is greyed out

The endpoint is not stereo, is set to a format the DAC rejects, or another spatial engine owns it. Set the device to Stereo and close the vendor app.

Sound is hollow or far away

Two processors are active or the endpoint reports 7.1. Turn off the game's own spatial setting or set the endpoint to stereo.

Crackling after enabling it

Lower the sample rate to 16-bit 48000 Hz and test again. Some USB bridges cannot keep up with the extra mixing.

It turns back off after every reboot

A driver or vendor utility resets the endpoint. Check whether the headset software installs its own audio service and disable that instead of fighting the switch.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Does Sonic work with any headphone?

Yes. It is a software renderer for stereo output and does not need a licensed device.

Is it good for competitive games?

It is decent, but a game with its own HRTF usually beats it. Choose one, not both.

How to undo this

Set Spatial sound back to Off in the same device menu and return the format to the previous value. Nothing is installed, so nothing has to be removed.
