Connect and confirm the controller
A wired pad or the official wireless adapter avoids the Bluetooth pairing quirks. Confirm it appears as an Xbox controller in the game controller panel before configuring anything.

A controller is a usable pointer for a media PC on the sofa. Windows does not do this alone, and the two paths differ in latency and precision.
Use **Steam Input** with the desktop layout for a ready-made pointer, or a small mapper that turns the stick into **relative mouse movement**. Set the deadzone and the pointer speed before you judge it.

Steam Input ships a desktop profile with a pointer, clicks and scrolling, and it works outside games while Steam runs. A dedicated mapper gives finer control of the acceleration curve.
The right stick should move the pointer relative to its current position, not jump to a screen coordinate. Absolute mapping makes fine clicking impossible.
Steam > Settings > Controller > Desktop Layout
A controller stick is noisy around the centre; a deadzone stops the pointer drifting while you are not touching it. Speed and acceleration decide whether you can hit a small button.
Pointer control without text entry is half a solution. The Windows touch keyboard opens on demand and works with the pointer, which makes search fields usable.

Try the three tasks you actually perform: open an app, pick a video and type a search. If two of them are painful, a cheap wireless keyboard with a trackpad is the better purchase.
The desktop layout is not active. Steam must be running with the controller connected.
Deadzone too small or a worn stick. Raise the deadzone first.
Steam Input and a mapper both active. Disable one.
The TV's game mode. Outside game mode the panel adds tens of milliseconds.
Yes, with a mapper, but you give up the ready-made desktop layout.
For media and browsing, yes. For text, no.
Disable the desktop layout in Steam and close the mapper. The controller returns to game-only behaviour with no leftover configuration.
