Use Lively Wallpaper Without Losing Frames in Games

Set up an animated desktop with Lively, then stop it from rendering while a game runs so the GPU is free when it matters.

TL;DR

Install **Lively**, apply the wallpaper, then enable **pause when a fullscreen app runs** and cap the wallpaper at **30 fps**. A 60 fps 4K video wallpaper is a constant GPU load, even on the desktop.

Before you start

Requirements

  • Windows 10 or Windows 11
  • Lively Wallpaper from the Microsoft Store or https://github.com/rocksdanister/lively/releases
  • A video or web wallpaper you have the rights to use
Step by step

Instructions

01

Install and add a wallpaper

Install Lively, open **Library** and use **Add Wallpaper** to pick a video file. Video wallpapers cost far less GPU time than web wallpapers with shaders.

02

Apply it to the right monitor

Right-click the wallpaper and choose **Set for monitor**. On a multi-monitor setup each screen can run its own wallpaper or share one stretched image.

tipDifferent aspect ratios stretch badly - pick a wallpaper made for the panel you use.
03

Pause it while gaming

Open **Lively Settings > Performance** and enable **Pause wallpaper when fullscreen application is running**. Also enable the pause rule for battery use on a laptop.

Pause on fullscreen app: On
Pause on battery: On
⚠ warningWithout the pause rule the wallpaper keeps rendering behind the game and costs frames in GPU-bound titles.
04

Cap the wallpaper frame rate

In the same page set the wallpaper's target frame rate to 30. A background animation at 30 fps looks identical to 60 and halves the GPU time.

Wallpaper FPS: 30
05

Keep it off the discrete GPU on laptops

Open **Settings > System > Display > Graphics**, add Lively and set it to **Power saving**. It then renders on the integrated GPU instead of waking the discrete one.

06

Test the difference

Start a game, Alt-Tab back and confirm the wallpaper is frozen. Compare GPU usage in Task Manager with the wallpaper running and paused.

Troubleshooting

Common issues

Black desktop after closing a game

Lively lost its render surface. Restart it from the tray icon, or use the 'Restart wallpaper' entry in the tray menu.

High GPU use while idle

A web wallpaper with heavy shaders. Switch to a video loop and cap the frame rate at 30.

Only one monitor shows the wallpaper

Set it per monitor. Span mode needs both panels at the same resolution.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Is it safe with anti-cheat games?

Close Lively before competitive titles with kernel-level anti-cheat; overlay-style hooks are the usual false-positive source.

Does it survive a reboot?

Yes, once you enable 'Run on startup' in the settings.

How to undo this

Close Lively and pick a static wallpaper in Windows Settings, then uninstall the app. The wallpaper files stay in your own folder until you delete them.
