Use Lossless Scaling to Upscale Old Games

A windowed 720p game on a 1440p screen looks soft and runs at whatever the engine allows. A scaling tool can sharpen it and add frames, at a cost in latency.

TL;DR

Run the game in **windowed or borderless** mode, pick a **scaling type** that suits the art style, and enable **frame generation** only when the base frame rate is already above **40**.

Before you start

Requirements

  • A scaling tool with frame generation
  • A game in windowed mode
  • Ten minutes
Step by step

Instructions

01

Start from windowed mode

The tool captures a window and scales it to the display. Exclusive fullscreen bypasses the capture path entirely, which is why the hotkey appears to do nothing.

⚠ warningBorderless windowed works and alt-tabs cleanly; windowed mode with a title bar wastes pixels on the decoration.
02

Pick the scaling algorithm by content

Pixel art wants a nearest-neighbour or integer scaler; 3D games look better with a sharpening or machine-learning scaler. Applying a smooth scaler to pixel art turns crisp edges into mush.

Scaling type: LS1 / FSR / Nearest
03

Match the frame generation to the base rate

Frame generation doubles a number that already exists. At 30 frames it turns an unplayable game into a smooth-looking one that still responds like 30, and the input lag is what you notice.

tipAbove 60 base frames the added latency is small; below 40 it is the dominant sensation.
04

Cap the base frame rate

An uncapped engine spikes and the generated frames inherit the spikes. A cap slightly below the display refresh keeps the pacing even and the GPU cooler.

05

Judge it in motion, not in a screenshot

Artifacts around fast-moving text and thin geometry are the tell. Play the first ten minutes of a busy scene before you decide the setting is good.

06

Keep a profile per game

A strategy game and a shooter want different scalers and different frame caps. Save the settings per executable instead of changing them every session.

Troubleshooting

Common issues

The hotkey does nothing

The game is in exclusive fullscreen or runs elevated. Set borderless and start both as the same user.

The picture is blurry

A smooth scaler on pixel art, or a mismatched aspect ratio. Change the algorithm and check the output resolution.

Input feels delayed

Frame generation at a low base rate. Turn it off or raise the base frame rate first.

The cursor is offset in menus

The capture area and the render area differ. Use borderless windowed and disable any display scaling.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Does this improve performance?

It improves smoothness and sharpness. The base frame rate still comes from the game.

Is it allowed online?

It captures the screen, which some anti-cheat systems dislike. Keep it to offline games.

How to undo this

Close the tool and set the game back to fullscreen. Nothing is installed into the game folder and no files change.
