Use Snap Layouts and Snap Groups From the Keyboard

Windows 11 snapping is faster from the keyboard than from the mouse, and the groups it remembers are the part people never find.

TL;DR

Press **Win + Z** over a window's maximise button, or snap directly with **Win + arrow keys**. Switch back to a saved layout with **Win + Tab** and the group thumbnails.

Before you start

Requirements

  • Windows 11
  • Five minutes
Step by step

Instructions

01

Learn the four direct chords

Win plus an arrow moves a window to half, a corner or the next monitor. Pressing the same arrow twice snaps it to the edge and ignores the free space.

Win + Left / Right / Up / Down
02

Use the layout picker when the screen is wide

The picker offers three- and four-column layouts that arrows cannot reach. It appears over the maximise button and takes a click or a second Win + Z.

Win + Z
tipThe picker needs a mouse or touch. With a keyboard only, arrows plus the taskbar are the practical route.
03

Return to a group instead of a window

Snap groups are remembered per set. Hovering the taskbar icon of one member shows the whole group, and clicking it brings back both windows in their places.

Win + Tab
04

Set a custom snap width

After snapping, drag the divider: Windows stores the new ratio for that pair. The next snap of the same pair uses the adjusted split.

⚠ warningA very narrow pane hides the window's own controls. Below roughly a quarter of the screen, use a virtual desktop instead.
05

Turn snapping on if it does nothing

The whole feature has a master switch. With it off, arrows still move windows but the layout picker and groups disappear.

Settings > System > Multitasking > Snap windows
06

Combine with virtual desktops

Snapping splits one screen; desktops separate whole projects. Two snap groups on two desktops covers a wide monitor and a laptop panel without extra hardware.

Ctrl + Win + D
Troubleshooting

Common issues

Win + Z does nothing

Snap windows is off, or the window is running fullscreen exclusive.

Groups are not remembered

The windows were closed one by one. Close them together from the taskbar preview.

Snapping jumps monitors

The arrow at the edge moves to the next display. Press the opposite arrow to come back.

A gap appears between panes

Snap assist left space. Drag the divider once and Windows keeps the ratio.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Does this work on Windows 10?

Arrows and edges yes, the layout picker and groups no.

Can I snap to a quarter screen?

Yes with the picker or by dragging to the corner, not with the arrows alone.

How to undo this

Nothing to undo. Turn the Snap windows switch off if you want the old free-floating behaviour back.
